British North Borneo Rarities Among More than 600 PMG-graded Notes in Noonans Sale

Two great rarities from British North Borneo are among over 600 notes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) in an upcoming auction. They are part of a banknotes auction presented by Noonans Mayfair on May 31 and June 1, 2023.

The top PMG-certified note in the auction is a British North Borneo / British Administration 1940-42 25 Dollars graded PMG 30 Very Fine (lot 814). This rare note issued during World War II is one of only seven in the PMG Population Report, with none graded finer. This note has an estimate of £7,000 to £9,000 (about $8,700 to $11,200).

The auction also includes a British North Borneo / British Administration 1940 5 Dollars graded PMG 35 Choice Very Fine (lot 813), with an estimate of £3,000 to £4,000 (about $3,700 to $5,000). It is one of only 53 examples in the PMG Population Report, with just two examples graded higher. Today, British North Borneo constitutes the easternmost part of Malaysia.

Other PMG-certified highlights in the auction include:

  • a Portuguese India 1906 (ND 1918-21) 20 Rupias Specimen graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated (lot 629) with an estimate of £6,000 to £8,000 (about $7,500 to $9,900)
  • a Southern Rhodesia / British Administration 1954 £1 graded PMG 62 Uncirculated (lot 1313) with an estimate of £4,000 to £5,000 (about $5,000 to $6,200)
  • an India - Princely States / Hyderabad FE1341 1,000 Rupees graded PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 1072) with an estimate of £4,000 to £5,000 (about $5,000 to $6,200)
  • an India - Princely States / Hyderabad 1936/FE1347 5 Rupees graded PMG 30 Very Fine (lot 1069) with an estimate of £3,000 to £4,000 (about $3,700 to $5,000)
  • an India / British Administration 1901-09 10 Rupees graded PMG 25 Very Fine (lot 1076) with an estimate of £3,000 to £4,000 (about $3,700 to $5,000)
  • a Syria, Banque de Syrie et du Liban graded PMG 15 Choice Fine (lot 1320) with an estimate of £3,000 to £4,000 (about $3,700 to $5,000)
  • a Portuguese India 1906 (ND 1906-18) 5 Rupias Specimen graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated (lot 628) with an estimate of £3,000 to £4,000 (about $3,700 to $5,000)
  • an India, Reserve Bank ND (1959-70) 5 Rupees - Persian Gulf Note graded PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 1093) with an estimate of £3,000 to £4,000 (about $3,700 to $5,000)
