Two PMG-certified US Rarities in the Spotlight in Stack’s Bowers Sale
Posted on 3/1/2023
Stack’s Bowers is offering over 400 US banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®), including two of the greatest rarities in currency collecting. Online bidding is underway for the Spring 2023 Auction - Session 7 - U.S. Currency sale, which will be held on March 23, 2023.
One of the highlights of the sale is an extremely rare 1882 $1,000 Gold Certificate graded PMG 30 Very Fine (lot 20355). The PMG Population Report includes only two examples of this particular catalog number for this high-denomination US note featuring a portrait of Alexander Hamilton. According to the auction house, only five are known with this signature combination, including two in government collections. This note has an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000.
The sale also includes an 1861 $5 Demand Note (Philadelphia) graded PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 20091), with an estimate of $400,000 to $600,000. Demand Notes were the lone federal paper currency for a very short period during the Civil War. Nearly all of them were redeemed, so few are available to collectors today. Fewer than 300 Demand Notes of all catalog numbers are listed in the PMG Population Report.
Other PMG-certified banknotes from the auction include:
