PMG-certified British Indian Banknote Among Highlights in Noonans Mayfair Auction

Posted on 2/16/2023

The March auction features hundreds of PMG-certified banknotes from around the world.

Hundreds of banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) are being offered in a Noonans Mayfair sale, including an exotic British Indian banknote from the early 1900s. Online bidding is already underway for Auction 694, which is set to end on March 2, 2023.

Leading the PMG-certified notes in the sale is an India / British Administration ND (1917) 2 Rupees, 8 Annas with a Cawnpore prefix graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated (lot 766). The 2 Rupees, 8 Annas denomination equates to 2.5 Rupees. The British government of India released this note in 1918 to combat silver hoarding as a result of World War I and as an ultimately unsuccessful experiment in shifting from the rupee-anna denomination to the dollar. It has an estimate of £20,000 to £26,000 (about $24,000 to $31,300).
