Indian Rarity Among Over 200 PMG-certified World Notes in Spink Sale

The January auction includes several impressive notes from India and the Mideast.

Spink is offering over 200 banknotes from around the world that are certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®), including several great rarities from India and the Mideast. Online bidding is underway for the Spink World Banknotes at NYINC Auction #381, which will be held January 13, 2023.

One of the auction's top notes is a stunning India/ British Administration 1928 1,000 Rupees graded PMG 35 Choice Very Fine (lot 139), with an estimate between £22,000 to £32,000 ($25,200 to $36,700). This high-denomination note features an oval portrait on the right of King George V as well as a watermark of his reverse image on the left. On the reverse, a landscape of Calcutta with a farmer and his cattle adorns the note. This example is tied for the second highest-graded among six examples in the PMG Population Report.

  • a Palestine, Currency Board 1944 £5 graded PMG 40 Extremely Fine (lot 229), with an estimate of £10,000 to £15,000 ($11,500 to $17,200)
  • a Palestine, Currency Board 1939 £10 graded PMG 50 About Uncirculated (lot 231), with an estimate of £9,000 to £12,000 ($10,300 to $13,800)
  • a Burma / British Administration ND (1917) 2 Rupees 8 Annas graded PMG 45 Choice Extremely Fine (lot 129), with an estimate of £8,000 to £12,000 ($9,200 to $13,800)
