Rare Vintage Hong Kong Note Among Hundreds of PMG-graded Rarities Offered by Spink
Posted on 12/19/2022
A rare vintage note from Hong Kong is among over 800 banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) that are being offered by Spink. Bidding is already underway for the Spink Winter Auction, scheduled to be held in eight parts, January 7-12, 2023.
Topping the auction with an estimate of 500,000 to 800,000 HKD (about $64,000 to $103,000) is a Hong Kong, Asiatic Banking Corporation ND (ca. 1800s) 500 Dollars Ramainder graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated (CSS86C, lot 2377). Notes from branches such as Colombo, Kandy, Singapore and Shanghai have been seen over the years, but it's rare to see an issued orange 500 Dollars payable in Hong Kong. There are fewer than a handful of examples, and this is the only one of this catalog number in the PMG Population Report.
Another highlight in this auction is a China / People’s Republic 1973 10 Yuan Artist’s Rendition (CSS86A, lot 281) that is encapsulated in a PMG holder without a numerical grade. This lot has an estimate of 200,000 to 300,000 HKD (about $26,000 to $39,000).
