Stack’s Bowers Offers PMG-certified Rarities from Norway and Panama

Posted on 12/19/2022

The January auction features hundreds of world banknotes certified by PMG.

A pair of seldom-seen Norwegian Specimens are among over 750 world banknotes that are certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) in a January auction. Bidding is already underway for Stack’s Bowers’ January 2023 NYINC Auction, which closes on January 14, 2023 (Session C), and January 15, 2023 (Session G).

A stand-out pair of notes featured in this auction is a Norway 1942 1,000 Kroner Specimen graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated (lot 31158), and a Norway 1942 500 Kroner Specimen graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 31157). Each of these scarce, high-denomination notes is the sole example in the PMG Population Report, and each has an estimate of $25,000 to $35,000. The 1942 series of Norwegian currency was printed by Waterlow & Sons Limited in London, where Norway's government was located in exile after the Nazi Germany invasion on April 9, 1940. Norway wasn’t liberated until 1945.

Another highlight is a Panama 1941 10 Balboas graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated (lot 30282) with an estimate of $25,000 to $35,000. Printed by HBNC, the 10 Balboa notes from this series are rarely found in public auctions. At the time of cataloging, PMG's Population Report lists only 16 issued examples of this Pick number, with only two graded finer than the presently offered note.
