PMG-certified Japanese Banknotes in Ginza Auction

The sale includes several early Japanese yen denominations graded by PMG.

Rare early Japanese banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) are part of a Ginza Coins auction of numismatic rarities on November 4, 2022. An especially noteworthy note in this sale is a Japan ND (1873) 20 Yen graded PMG Very Fine 30 (lot 292) with a starting price of 8,000,000 JPY (about $53,400).

As a result of the reforms enacted by the Meiji government in the early 1870s, a new currency was established: the Japanese yen, which was issued in both coins and paper money. This auction also includes other early paper money examples of the yen, which today is one of the top currencies for international investment and trade.

  • a Japan / Constitutional Monarchy ND (1873) 10 Yen graded PMG Very Fine 20 (lot 293) with a starting price of 3,800,000 JPY (about $25,300)
  • a Japan, Bank of Japan ND (1958) 10,000 Yen graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 356) with a starting price of 1,000,000 JPY (about $6,675)
  • a Japan / Constitutional Monarchy ND (1973) 5 Yen graded PMG Very Fine 25 (lot 294) with a starting price of 600,000 JPY (about $4,000)
  • a Japan / Constitutional Monarchy 1881 (ND 1883) 10 Yen graded PMG Choice About Uncirculated 58 (lot 307) with a starting price of 600,000 JPY (about $4,000)
  • a Japan, Bank of Japan ND (1885) 10 Yen graded PMG Choice Very Fine 35 (lot 312) with a starting price of 600,000 JPY (about $4,000)
  • a Japan, Bank of Japan 1900-1913 100 Yen - Payable In Gold graded PMG Choice Very Fine 35 (lot 322) with a starting price of 600,000 JPY (about $4,000)
