PMG-certified Vintage Banknotes from Cuba Showcased in Upcoming Heritage Sale

Posted on 9/20/2022

Banco Español de la Habana notes from the 1800s are turning heads in the upcoming auction.

Over 150 PMG-certified Cuban banknotes, including great rarities from the 19th century, are being offered in an upcoming Heritage Auctions sale. Bidding is already underway for the October 2022: A Special Collection of Cuban Banknotes Showcase Auction being held October 9, 2022.

The auction begins with the top note in the sale: a Cuba, Banco Español de la Habana 1857-59 300 Pesos graded PMG 15 Choice Fine (lot 89001). Established in 1855, the bank began printing Cuban notes including this large-format 300 Pesos. All notes from the first print series were withdrawn just a few years later, making them virtually impossible to track down today. This example has a large overprint translating to “unusable” across the front. All the note’s details are clearly legible and in good condition. It has an estimate of at least $15,000.
