PMG-certified Chinese Banknote Expected to Sell for Over $100,000 in Spink Sale

Bidding is underway for this rarity and hundreds of other PMG-certified notes from Asia.

Over 1,000 banknotes from China and elsewhere that are certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) are being offered in an upcoming sale presented by Spink. Online bidding is already underway for auctions CSS82ACSS82B and CSS82G, which are being held September 30 through October 2, 2022.

The top PMG-certified note in the auctions is a China 1951 500 Yuan graded PMG 45 Choice Extremely Fine, an incredible rarity highly desired by collectors. One of the scarce banknotes of the First Series Renminbi, the note features a detailed illustration of a traditional Chinese building surrounded by scenery. It has an estimate of HKD950,000 to HKD1.4 million (about $121,000 to $178,300).

Other PMG-certified highlights in the sales presented by Spink, a respected auction house focused on preserving the world’s historic collectibles, include:

  • a Macau, Banco Nacional Ultramarino 1912 1 Pataca graded PMG 50 About Uncirculated EPQ (lot 6458, CSS82G), with an estimate of HKD180,000 to HKD350,000 (about $23,000 to $44,600)

  • a China, Hon Fat Bank Printer’s Design (ca. 1910s) 5 Dollars – Swatow graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated (lot 1026, CSS82B), with an estimate of HKD15,000 to HKD30,000 (about $1,900 to $3,800)
