Stack’s Bowers Galleries Offers NGC-certified Coins and PMG-certified Notes

A wide variety of coins and banknotes from China and elsewhere are in the spotlight during a series of mid-December auction sessions.

Hundreds of world coins that are certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) and hundreds of world banknotes that are certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) are being offered in a series of eight auction sessions presented by Stack's Bowers Galleries that are focused on Asian rarities. Online bidding is already underway for the Hong Kong (SAR) Collectors Choice Online Auctions, including Session A and Session 1, with all auctions ending between December 12 and December 18, 2025.

A top NGC-certified lot in the auction is a China YR11(1922) Hunan Silver Dollar graded NGC MS 64 (Session 1, lot 50298), with an estimate of $40,000 to $60,000. This rare coin was struck to commemorate the Hunan Provincial Constitution, which went into effect in 1922. The constitution was part of the federal movement in China that sought to have the country's central government share sovereignty with regional entities, with Hunan being a leader of the movement. There are only 83 examples of this particular coin in the NGC Census, with a mere 11 of those in finer condition.

A top PMG-graded highlight in the auction is a Hong Kong, Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China 1923-29 50 Dollars graded PMG 20 Very Fine (Session A, lot 40185), with an estimate of $30,000 to $45,000. This intricately designed iconic note came to be known as the "Gourd 50 Dollars" because of its central vignette's shape. The vibrant orange and green colors paired with its design and rarity make it a popular banknote, one that is often missing in many high-end collections. Only 13 issued examples of this particular catalog number are found in the PMG Population Report.
