Pick Numbers for Russian Notes?

I have two large Russian notes that my grandfather had brought over to the United States when his family fled the Baltic region. I remember one is a 1912 Tsar Peter I 500 Ruble note. I think the other is a 100 ruble note (it's locked in my safe deposit box). Since I have a free PMG grading certificate, I wouldn't mind these notes slabbed, mainly for preservation since I have no interest in selling them. I was told that PMG would do this if the notes had Pick Numbers.

So my questions are:

  • What is a Pick Number? (I am not a currency collector)
  • Is having these notes slabbed like this a good way to preserve these notes?
  • If this is not a good way to preserve these notes, does anyone have a better suggestion?

THANKS!
