Continental currency - counterfeit?

This 1/6 dollar note from Feb 17, 1776 deviates from the picture on page 64 of "The Early Paper Money of America (5th edition)" by Newman such that this note says "ONE SIXTH OF A DOLLAR" in the very bottom of the note, whereas the note pictured in Newman says "1 SIXTH OF A DOLLAR" (1st image posted). Also on my note the "SIXTH" has a dark background. I can not detect any other obvious differences.

 

Is this likely a contemporary counterfeit or perhaps a variation?

If it is a counterfeit, are there guidelines regarding the value?
