The Standard Catalog of World Paper Money is the general reference for world notes. It comes in three volumes: Volume I is for regional notes, Volume II covers government issues until 1960 and Volume III covers government issues from 1960 onward. There are country specific references but they will be costly for a casual collector.

The German notgeld will not be in the Standard Catalog. You have to get a specialized German catalog for these type notes.

There are many catalogs for US currency including the Friedburg Catalog, Krause-Lemke, Hessler-Chambliss and others.
