I am very new to collecting coins and have a lot of questions.

I have had an interest in coins/stamps since my first JR stamp collection set and have just recently began to pursue this interest. I would like information on topics such as; " how to determine when a coin is worth getting graded, considering the cost of the service vs the value of the coin.

I have picked up quite a few gems of wisdom just reading the message posts and I appreciate the e-bay advice it saved me some dollars last evening as I usually go by the sellers percentages of overall satisfaction and do not read the actual comments.I have interests in silver dollars and pennies and I have thus far not purchased anything worth the costs I paid for it so I guess I am a sucker, but I guess most of us where at one point or another.

At the age of 15 I started to collect....

At the age of 15 I started to collect and was pretty proud of my collection but after 4-5 years it got stolen and I lost my intrest:-(

Anyhow i?m now 52 years and regained my faith & intrest about 2 years ago.

Must say i?m adicted & use at least 4-5 houers daily looking for new coins & Coin lots to buy so my colection is definitly growing again.

I?w just joined here & am planing to start submitting coins for grading soon.

I?m curently most into Russian, Japanese, Swedish, Philippine coins.

1 coin I?m spessialy found of is a 1 Grano (Alof de Wignacourt 1601 to 1622)Malta.

I bought it for a few dollars only as the seller dident know the coin, it toulk me a few days to find out what it was by help from someone with better knowlege than me in a forum :-)

I?m also interested in Bank notes.

I?m happy I still have time to learn but sad I dident start up again at yanger age!

What would a complete set be worth?

I am looking to put together a full set of all three denominations of the 1896 Education notes.

I am starting with the $1 note. I found a nice one on eBay at

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/180881940473?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

This is a raw note that looks to be in AU condition.

Is it worth doing the Buy it Now insteaad of the auctionas to not risk losing out on winning it?

Any recommendations on putting the $2 and $5 notes together and is there any added value of having them as a set???

    Thank You!

    -Dylan

I add the final note in my set...

I added the 20th and final note for my fractional currency type set today, a second issue fifty cent note graded AU 58. It completes the type set, but I still have work to do. My goal is to have notes that graded in the 55-63 range, so I will continue to search for up-grades.

Learning to make smart investment choices for my children.

My father collected some foreign coins when he was in the military. None were of value but the intresting pictures struck a fasination with coins. I was hooked. I began collecting other coins and was given a coin collection from my Mother; there were many dollar pieces, quarters, dimes, and pennies. I collected through the years and recently began making high investment purchases for my two children. Something I can pay $500 (example amount) at todays prices may double its value amount in the next 20-30 years. Yet, I did get duped along the way. Without doing my homework, I bought some pieces that not worth much over there face value. Luckly, I didn't loose to much money! Now I research pieces, sets, picking from the higher tiered grading companies, and making smarter choices. Although, I feel that I am still learning. Tina in Maine

I really butchered my first attempt at a journal page so I'm just testing this out to see if it posts correctly before I start over.

I think if I 'Use Message Boards Login' I'll be able to edit it correctly. The last page I created, I wasn't able to gain access to it after it posted in terms of making changes.

    High hopes!

I have been purchasing more and more items from the BEP. My most recent purchases have been the limited edition collector's sets. I am hoping that as they sell out that the value increases. I just purchased the 1999 $10.00 Federal Reserve set limited to 2000 total availability. Anyone have any feedback for me? Let me know!

I love to collect a little bit of everything, bottom line , I live collecting and over the years I've developed a pretty big and valuable coin and currency collection

I've been concentrating mostly on my Confederate States of America currency collection. I've got one of each denomination $0.50-$500 notes, all in EF-UC, and I'm trying to collect all the different prints of each denomination all in good the same condition to put together a complete set of every note from 1861-1864 and have one of the best collections. I've got around 30 different notes but my collection is slow going because of my desire for only the best quality which as all know is expensive but I will continue till complete.

I'm also trying to complete the Australian Chinese Calandar Lunar Series II Year of the Dragon. I have all but three or four coins. I like low Mintage collections due to the higher value increase.

I have the complete BU Silver Eagle set and also the complete OGP Proof Silver Eagles complete with all Burnished OGP's. The Graded set I want to collect all the PF70 Graded Proof coins which I have a lot of already and one of my prize Eagles the 2008W Rev. of 2007, MS70 I won for $510. about a year ago.

I completed my BU & Proof IKE Silver Dollar collection in a Dansco Albumn , also in the Graded version.

Completed Susan B. Anthony set including the 1981 type II

    2010 5 oz Quarters set MS69, 2011-2012 BU sets

    Morgan Dollars I have a lot of including an 1889CC AU58, GSA set of 1880CC MS64, 1881CC MS64, 1882CC MS63, 1883CC MS65, 1884CC MS63,1885CC MS64

    1878CC MS62, 1879CC VF20, 1891CC MS65, also a 1891CC VF20 and an 1890P MS65. I've got lbs of Morgans and half I haven't been through those were just some of my better graded ones.

    PCGS is worse...

I just read a journal about PMG's "ridiculously slow service". I sympathize, but get this. I am a member of both PMG and PCGS-C, and I am currently right at 5 MONTHS with my "complimentary" membership submissions. Now, I realize that these have the lowest priority at both companies, but I have always gotten my PMG "complimentary submissions" back in about a month. I sent an e-mail to PCGS-C about 2 months in, and was told they should be complete in "a few weeks". That was 3 months ago. I try to be a patient guy, but .....

    snail mail applies to PMG

I sent in 5 coins to PCGS and 5 notes to PMG for grading, both received on oct 31, 2011. I have had the coins back for a week now and the notes are still stuck in "received" at PMG. I might as well send notes to PCGS also because PMG turn around time is horrendous.

    All in a row

I still have not found a way to use my sequential notes in a set yet. Then I have to many PCGS notes and I know we can not use them here, and I understand why.I suppose mI should get it together and submit my notes so I can make some kind of killer set here. I'm mainly a coin person but I have always like things in some kind of order, and notes does this just fine for me. I think I will branch out a little and collect with making a set in mind. It's a tough one. In coins it's very hard to stay with all NGC. I don't mind one bit about getting PCGS coins. In notes though PCGS notes are worthless. I suppose I should have a sale and rid myself of these notes because I don't want to set up to collection sites. Well I gues it'll work it's self out. It just takes time and I find I am a little impatient. I have a lot of time to make up.

Well it's good to get it out and it helps me to concentrate on whats important.

Can't collect coins without eventually collecting notes.

Well I've collected coins since elementary school as did most of us; yes with the blue Whitman folders. I stopped collecting in high school when I discovered girls and muscle cars. I married my first girlfriend and still own my first muscle car, oh and still married to my first wife. I had to include muscle because my actual first car was a Toyota corolla.

I started collecting currency in 2012 at the other TPG just to see the difference. And WOW what a difference. I begged and bribed PMG to cross over my notes but that's not available. Since I have mostly top pops with 16 being single finest I can't really send them in on a chance that they'll make the grade. Just this year I started a signature set and a few competative sets here at PMG though they'll never be award winners I've found it very interesting. I'm starting with just sheets of 4 and 8, the largest PMG currently encases though I've seen older sheets of 12 certified by PMG. The chat boards on the PMG side may not be as active as on the coin side but the helpfulness, kindness and respectful answers and willingness is strong. In 2012 there just didn't seem to be many PMG notes available but now when looking at the auction catalogs it's about 50 - 50. I also like the fact that NGC & PMG are the same company. That's not the case with PCGS and PCGScurrency; the currency division was sold off a few years ago as it wasn't making the money that parent company had hoped. Collectors universe is a publicly traded under the symbol CLCT on the NASDAQ. One would think with share holders PCGS would try harder but that's not the case. After submitting coins and currency to both places I can say NGC is clearly superior in every aspect and they don't even pay dividends to anyone. So my point is when you start your currency set don't make the same mistake I made; use PMG. Lastly, the auction prices are the same for either grader in currency unlike with coins. Yes, I've read and been told by several people why the price differences in coins and I can't explain it, understand it or care.

    and Found some star notes

    Hi All,

Just wandered over from the Numismatic forum with a question for you currency folks. I was digging through some of my old stuff and I found that I had purchased a sheet of 4 two dollar bills in a BEP folder each of which is a star note. Not sure when they were purchased but suspect sometime in the 1980's. Could these be worth anything much beyond their face value? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks and Happy Collecting

Just a rant, on understanding CGC's rules, nothing more nothing debateable.

So I recently sent in my cupon for my 4 issues to be graded for joing up with CGC and I'll be honest that was one of the many things which attracted me to joining up.

So I'm looking through my comics and I knew I wanted to have some of the books I got signed by some pretty awesome artists @ this year's Boston Comic-con graded, so I start the paper work and I'm like cool maybe they quailfy for the "sigunture series" which I was informed was not possible... to which I was like "WTF" then I read the rules again and figured ok, their play ground their rules, EVEN Though it was @ a con that CGC was working I found out that someone from their company needs to be there to sign off on as a wittness... Which Was kinda of a bummer epsically when you think about getting excited about down the road showing someone your signed copy of ______ comic only to find out it would just get a "Green" label asaposed to "Gold" to which after a while I was like "Enh" screw it, as I know it was signed, and It not like I'm getting the books graded to sell, I mean in all honesty, If I get a book graded It's going in the Safe Deposit Box with the rest of my important stuff... I just had to go " WTH,Ok Whatever" Well looks like I'm going to abuse this.

  9. Need to hear from you fractional guys!

I bought this Fr. 1374 recently online and when it arrived there are several security fibers across Lincoln's forehead. Do you find that a distraction and would it's value be effected? It is a beautiful note graded by PMG as Choice About Uncirculated 58 w/ EPQ. I would appreciate all your comments. I am more of a coin guy and could use your expertise.
